The Gibson Les Paul is a solid body electric guitar that was first sold in 1952.
The Les Paul was designed by Ted McCarty who later enlisted popular guitarist Les Paul, to endorse the new model. Although Les later claimed to have been intimately involved in the design of the guitar, it is now generally accepted that the guitar was substantively designed by McCarty and his team with Les' contributions being limited to the initial gold finish on the top and the short-term implementation of the ill-fated Les Paul trapeze tailpiece. It is one of the best-known electric guitar types in the world, along with Fender's Telecaster and Stratocaster.
In 1974, Gibson released the 20th anniversary Les Paul Custom in a white, black, cherry sunburst and honey sunburst finish (at least these four colors were made) with "20th Anniversary" engraved on the 12th fret block inlay.
Ready Player One
On the Planet Syrinx, in the Hidden Chamber of the temple, there is a 1974 Gibson Les Paul embedded neck first in a stone along the north wall. Parzival claims the guitar in a manner reminiscent of Arthur taking the sword in the movie Excalibur. He plays some music with it, and receives a hint to how to open the Third Gate. Since the Sixers had immediately returned the Gibson Les Paul instead of playing music, they couldn't figure out how to open the gate.
